The Garces girls golf team narrowly missed a bid to reach the Southern California Regional in 2006, but it looks like the Rams have come back with a vengeance in 2007.

Led by 2007 All-Area Player of the Year Mica Guzman and fellow All-Area first team member Cassie Clayton, all six of the Garces players are in the Southeast Yosemite League's top 10 in scoring average.

"She's really come on strong, she's really worked hard on her game," Garces coach Lela Steiber said of Clayton. "And so has Mica. She's playing with new clubs."

Steiber went on to say that once Guzman becomes accustomed to her new clubs, her scoring average should go even lower.

Clayton is leading the league with an 81.95 average. Guzman is scoring at 82.95, second in the league, through Monday's mini tournament.

Other Rams include Andrea Franco (86.6), Julia Berchtold (90.91), Ali Vicente (92.57) and Ellen Krause (94.23).

Garces was atop the league standings with 18 points through Monday.

The Rams lead Liberty, which has 15 points. A league championship would be great, but the Rams are gunning for the Central Section title and a berth in the regional tournament.

"Absolutely, that's our goal," Steiber said. "We're looking forward to the opportunity to try and win Valley."

North's Brown commits

North softball player Breanna Brown has committed to play at Wichita State beginning in the spring of 2009.

Last season as a junior, Brown batted .535 with two home runs and 26 RBIs.

Playing mostly shortstop and pitcher, she also added six doubles, five triples, 41 runs and six stolen bases.

As a pitcher, Brown tallied a 15-5 record to go with 71 strikeouts and a 3.60 ERA in 109 innings pitched.

North finished 26-9 with a 6-4 league mark, good enough for third in the SWYL.
