Jolie Roberson
Jolie Roberson will be attending the National Young Leaders Conference in Washington, D.C. from July 26th through August 4th. She has been selected as one of the outstanding high school students from across the United States to participate in this unique leadership development conference in our nation’s capital. During the 10 day program, the National Young Leaders Conference will provide scholars with the opportunity to interact with a variety of personnel who operate within the three branches of government, the news media and the international community.
“NYLC prepares the students to serve our country well, whether that means as elected officials in our nation’s capital, as active members within communities around the world, or as intelligent, creative and responsible members of the work force,” said Mike Lasday, executive director of the Congressional Youth Leadership Council, the organization that sponsors the conference.
To complement the schedule of special meetings and briefings, students will participate in a number of leadership skill-building activities and simulations. In one role-play activity titled If I Were President, students act as the president and cabinet members responding to an international crisis. Students also participate in Testing the Constitution, in which they examine actual Supreme Court cases. The Conference culminates with the Model Congress, in which scholars assume the roles of U.S. Representatives and debate, amend and vote on proposed mock legislation.
Jolie has attended Frontier High School for the past 2 years. She has made many contributions to the school through her activities with some of the clubs on campus, where she has been an officer. She has been the stage manager for Frontier High School’s Air Band for the past two years. She has been actively involved from the beginning in the Filmmaking class, which started out as a film club. She is excited to be selected to participate in the trip to our nation’s capital.
