Two killed, two injured in head-on crash on Highway 65

Two people were killed and two others suffered major injuries in a head-on collision Thursday evening on Highway 65, just north of Lerdo Highway.

A GMC pickup truck traveling southbound on Highway 65 drifted into the northbound lane and hit a Nissan pickup truck shortly before 7 p.m., California Highway Patrol Sgt. James Lee said. Two people in the Nissan died and a small child suffered major injuries.

The driver of the GMC pickup also suffered major injuries, Lee said.

No names or ages of those involved in the accident were available.

Police seek public’s help in search for shooting suspect

Bakersfield police are asking for your help finding a man they believe was involved with shooting Manuel Perez on Dec. 19.

Police are looking for Ismael Guerrero, 23, of Bakersfield. He is a Hispanic male, 5 feet 7 inches tall, 210 pounds, with black hair and brown eyes.

Guerrero, along with Lora Carlos, is believed to have gone to Perez’s home in the 4200 block of Mattnick Drive and shot Perez in the chest and abdomen after an argument.

Carlos was arrested shortly after the incident. Perez has been released from the hospital, according to Bakersfield police Detective Greg Terry.

Man sought on suspicion of domestic violence arrested

A man who was wanted on suspicion of domestic violence was arrested in Tehachapi on Sunday, according to a Thursday news release from the Bakersfield Police Department.

On Oct. 15, Reford Foss, 31, is suspected of going to his estranged wife’s house and assaulting her and her brother. His wife, afraid for her safety, shot Foss in the abdomen, police said. Foss was taken to Kern Medical Center but fled during treatment.

Foss was wanted on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon, attempted kidnapping, burglary and violation of a restraining order. He was found at a relative’s home in Tehachapi on Dec. 24.

Man suffers injuries after rolling vehicle off Highway 33

A 58-year-old man suffered major injuries after his vehicle went off the roadway on Highway 33 and down a steep embankment, rolling over several times.

The man, whose full name was not included in a California Highway Patrol news release, was airlifted to Kern Medical Center.

The man was driving southbound on Highway 33, south of Klipstein Canyon Road, at 1:25 p.m. Thursday when his vehicle went off the roadway, across the shoulder and down the embankment. The vehicle came to a stop on its roof and the driver, who is from Orcutt, Calif., was pinned inside, the news release said.

Free tax preparation program seeking volunteers

A program that will provide free tax preparation to qualifying residents in the Shafter and Bakersfield areas is seeking volunteers.

The Community Action Partnership of Kern’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will help working parents and the elderly with low to moderate incomes, according to a Community Action Partnership of Kern news release.

Volunteers are being recruited and an orientation will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the partnership’s administrative offices at 300 19th St. in Bakersfield, the news release said. A training program will be held in January.

The orientation is not mandatory, but the training program is, the news release said. Volunteers will prepare income tax returns for households with income of $50,000 or less.

The 2007 Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program will be available at 131 S. Chester Ave. in Bakersfield and 455 E. Euclid Ave. in Shafter, the news release said.

Longtime KHSD employee planning to retire in February

After 48 years with the Kern High School District, Associate Superintendent for Personnel Jim Fillbrandt plans to retire on Feb. 2, district spokesman John Teves said.

Fillbrandt, who also is the district’s labor negotiator, has been associate superintendent for 26 years. He began his career with the district as an English teacher at South High in 1958. He taught for 15 years before becoming an administrator and then principal of Bakersfield High.

When Fillbrandt started at the district, it had eight high schools and about 12,000 students. The district now has 16 high schools and more than 36,000 students.

Fillbrandt also has served as president of the Association of California School Administrators and the American Association for Employment in Education.

He also was a founder of the Bakersfield Civic Light Opera, which is now known as the Bakersfield Music Theatre. He’s now executive producer at the theater.

Symphony associates to host annual Black and White Ball

The Bakersfield Symphony Associates will host the annual Black and White Ball, celebrating 75 years of the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra, on Jan. 20.

The event begins at 5:30 p.m. at the Petroleum Club.

There will be a gourmet dinner, dancing to the Ronnie Kay Orchestra and silent and live auctions.

All profits benefit the Bakersfield Symphony Orchestra.

Tickets are $100 per person in advance. After Jan. 6, they will cost $125 per person. Space is limited.

Avian enthusiasts to hold Christmas Bird Count

Nature enthusiasts are invited to participate in the Christmas Bird Count Saturday, Sunday, Wednesday and Thursday. Bird watching experience isn’t necessary.

Interested participants need to bring binoculars and $5 for the National Audubon Society.

Kern County has rich biodiversity. Many people in Bakersfield and other parts of the San Joaquin Valley aren’t aware of the Kern River Valley, a “magnificent playground in their own backyard,” said Alison Sheehey, who will be leading the Sunday count.

She said they normally spot about 130 species during the counts.

The best way to learn how to join the counts is to call each day’s compiler for more information. Denise LaBerteaux is leading Saturday’s count in the South Fork Valley. LaBerteaux may be reached at 760-378-4278.

Sheehey will lead the count in the Kern River Valley on New Year’s Eve. Her number is 760-378-2029.
