Four people were arrested Sunday evening after leading Kern County sheriff's deputies on a car chase through east and central Bakersfield, according to Bakersfield Police Department Lt. Joe Bianco and the Kern County Sheriff's Department.

The BPD assisted the Sheriff's Department after police received a call of a car accident at Alfred Harrell Highway and Highway 178, Bianco said.

The incident began as a fight at Hart Park, according to a sheriff's sergeant at the scene of the arrest.

An off-duty park ranger was hit while driving his personal vehicle in the park about 6:25 p.m. and that is when the BPD got involved, Bianco said.

The chase began at Highway 178, but ultimately led deputies down Fairfax Road and across town on Niles Street. The sheriff's helicopter was involved in tracking the vehicle and the suspects once they left the vehicle.

During the pursuit, three or four vehicles were clipped by the suspects' vehicle but no major damage was done, according to the sheriff's sergeant.

One person was dropped off near the intersection of Forrest and H streets and the vehicle continued driving.

A short time later, the vehicle stopped in central Bakersfield and all of the occupants bailed out, Bianco said.

Four people were arrested in the 1800 block of Cherry Street on suspicion of evading and resisting arrest, but their identities were not immediately available.

It was unclear if there was fifth suspect still at large Sunday night.

No further information was available at press time.
