County writes off $879,313 in lost library books, bad debt

Supervisor Michael Rubio asked Kern County Library staff if there is a way to modernize the lending of books and other library materials.

"We can improve the way materials are lent to the public as well as educating the public about how important it is to return materials," said Sherry Gomez, deputy director of libraries for the county. "We need to make changes and we're working toward that."

On Tuesday supervisors wrote off $879,313 in bad library debt and lost materials from the three years leading up to June 30, 2004.

Rubio asked library officials to come back with information on, "what we're losing 2004 to today."

Gomez said the library is looking at doing more to educate library patrons and notify lenders more quickly that they are overdue to return items to the library.

That could, she said, create a fresher trail for collection agencies if an account goes delinquent.
