The 17-year-old Oildale girl killed in a hit-and-run Wednesday morning possibly wandered into traffic on Lerdo Highway before she was hit by an unknown driver who fled, Shafter Police Department said Thursday.

Additionally, the 28-year-old friend of Nancy Medina deemed a “person of interest” by police has been ruled out as suspect and has sought legal counsel, said Capt. Jeff Bell with Shafter Police.

Christopher Boylan and the truck he drives were being sought by police Wednesday. He was potentially the last person seen with Medina, police said. His attorneys contacted the department, and officials analyzed his truck.

“It's obvious the vehicle was not involved in a hit-and-run,” Bell said.

Investigators said Medina left her Oildale home with a male companion at 1 a.m. She was found on Lerdo Highway near Highway 99 after a driver reported a body on the road at about 1:20 a.m.

When Shafter Police arrived, Hall Ambulance officials were already administering aid. She was lying in the road when medical personnel arrived.

She died from her injuries at 5:30 a.m. at the hospital.

Investigations now believe Medina may have gone into the lane into westbound traffic when she was hit. She was thrown more than 100 feet.

“We don't know how or why she wandered into traffic, Bell said. “We're still trying to figure out what's going on.”

Police are interviewing Boylan today. As of now, he is only considered a source of information, Bell said.

The coroner's office is calling the death suspicious and are conducting an exam on her this morning.

Medina’s MySpace page states her “family wishes to to be left alone” and to please not pay her mother respects as “she is in too much pain.”

Police have no suspects in the hit-and-run. Anyone with information on the case is asked to call 746-8500.
