Christopher Wayne Sheppard of Bakersfield, was driving downhill in his 1999 Ford F-250 truck westbound east of General Beale Road. He tried to pass Mohamed Ali, 33 of California City, who was driving a 1999 BMW 323i in the fast lane, but hit him from behind, according to highway patrol reports.
After hitting Ali, Sheppard then overtook Queenie Turner of California City, who was driving westbound in the No. 2 lane in her 1995 Ford Escort. He struck her from behind and sent her up the right side embankment.
Sheppard also went up the right hand embankment but overturned. The roof of his truck was crushed and he suffered fatal injuries, officials said.
The other two drivers were transported to Kern Medical Center with moderate, but nonlife-threatening injuries.
Highway patrol officials are not sure why the man was driving so fast. The coroner's office is screening him for illegal drugs during an autopsy.
