Downtown has a new nightclub, but you don’t have to be 21 years old to get in. Screwy’s is a new, 5,000-square-foot lounge at 902 19th St. with a “bar” that serves coffee, smoothies and energy drinks. It’s open to all ages, but visitors 14 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.

The facility had a “soft opening” about three weeks ago, opening just a couple of days a week. The plan is to expand hours of operation beginning this summer, said owner Marshall McCullough.
Starting at 7 p.m. Fridays, Screwy’s has either live music or a DJ. Local bands play every Saturday. This week, it’s Natural Movement, a group that blends rock, jazz, hip hop and funk, McCullough said.
In addition to a stage, the venue has a huge back patio that McCollough wants to complement with a grassy area that will serve as a private dog park. He hopes to charge admission and donate fees to the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
BOUTIQUE TO CELEBRATE MOVE
Little White Dress bridal boutique is moving into a larger location, and will hold a ribbon cutting Wednesday to celebrate.
The store moved three weeks ago from its 600-square-foot location in the Haberfelde building on 17th Street downtown to a new, 2,000-square-foot boutique at 1800 21st St., also downtown. The new glass-and-corrugated-steel building features a loft and skylights, and owner Jennifer Cantelmi plans to install a rooftop garden for bridal parties and special occasions.
A ribbon cutting open to the public is 4:30 p.m. Wednesday, and a private party featuring a D.J., hors d’oeuvres and cocktails follows.
NETWORKING EVENT FOR HEALTH CARE
An effort to bring together Kern County’s medical community kicks off Wednesday with a networking dinner from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at Comprehensive Blood & Cancer Center, 6501 Truxtun Ave.
The focus of the event will be to raise awareness of medical services available locally in order to “create a more cohesive health-care community,” said Andrea Lee, who helped organize the meeting as a business developer at Kern Economic Development Corp..
“Maybe we can keep some of our patients here instead of sending them to L.A.,” she added.
The blood and cancer center is hosting the free event, which is to include presentations by representatives of KEDC, the center, the Valley Institute of Prosthetics & Orthotics, Bakersfield Heart Hospital and Houchin Blood Bank.
