The discovery of unstable soils beneath Columbus Street in northeast Bakersfield may extend a roadwork project there by about two weeks.

A project to reconstruct Columbus between Mount Vernon Avenue and Auburn Street began at the end of April and was expected wrap up the end of June. But the contractor recently discovered that some of the road was built on a layer of clay or silt that can move when heavy construction equipment is driven over it.
The contractors will now have to remove the unstable layers and replace it with sturdier material, according to City Construction Superintendent Stuart Patteson.
