An experimental downtown development, 1612 City Lofts, seems to be off to a solid start.

Tentative buyers are lined up for three of nine available residential units, according to developer Eydie Gibson.
The project, set to overhaul the historic Hay Building at the corner of 19th and Eye streets and turn it into urban-style lofts, started accepting reservation checks at a May 2 open house.
“The common theme of that night was, ‘We’ve been waiting for something like this,’” Gibson said in a Tuesday voice message.
Units run from 719 to 1,347 square feet — a departure from the single family homes that dominate the city’s new construction.
Several curious local developers came to tour the lofts too, 1612 City Lofts marketer Don Martin said.
Lofts are priced at more than $200 per square foot. And a few of the approximately 300 attendees bristled at the cost, Martin said.
But others liked the open design and green elements, he said.
The lofts should be finished by late summer or early fall, according to Martin.
