The Los Angeles area tops the list, but four of the top five most polluted areas in the country are in the Central Valley. The reason? Its bowl-like topography that traps in contaminants plus heavy car and truck traffic.
Here are the top 10 most polluted U.S. cities, according to Forbes:
1. Los Angeles (including Long Beach and Riverside)
2. Bakersfield
3. Fresno and Madera
4. Visalia and Porterville
5. Merced
6. Houston (including Baytown and Huntsville)
7. Sacramento (including Arden, Arcade and Truckee)
8. Dallas/Fort Worth
9. New York (including Newark, N.J., and Bridgeport, Conn.)
10. Philadelphia (including Camden, N.J. and Vineland, N.J.)
