Matthew McCool is recovering after being injured in Iraq.

U.S. Army Spc. Matt McCool spoke to his family Friday from Landstuhl Regional Medical Center near the German town of the same name, where he is in intensive care.

“Matthew sounded very good, uplifted, thankful, but groggy,” McCool’s father Brian Wilcox said. The soldier, while joking that he looked like Frankenstein, told his parents he loved them and looked forward to seeing them.

McCool, who recently re-enlisted for another four years of service, was expected moved out of the ICU Saturday, Wilcox said. Next week, he will likely be flown to Washington, D.C., for treatment at Walter Reed National Army Medical Center.
