Deputies from Ridgecrest, the Sheriff's Department Off Highway Vehicle Team, Kern County Parks and Recreation Law Enforcement Rangers and the Bureau of Land Management patrolled the desert areas of Eastern Kern County last weekend, according to a release by Kern County Sheriff's Department.

About 50,000 people were recreating in the area, and lawmen stopped more than 1,500 off-road riders at checkpoints, the release said. Emergency workers responded to several medical aid calls including two motorcycle-related deaths.

Tips from the Sheriff's Department for those who ride off-highway vehicles:

* Always wear protective gear including a Department of Transportation-approved helmet, goggles, gloves, arm and leg protection and boots.

* Become familiar with the vehicle you are riding and only ride a vehicle that fits your size and riding abilities.

* Do not ride over your abilities and be aware of what others are doing around you.
