Richard Anthony Alonzo, 26, faces felony charges of vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence and hit-and-run resulting in death. Judge Michael Lewis ordered that he remain in custody on $50,000 bail and set a preliminary hearing for March 20.
Alonzo is believed to have smashed into a vehicle driven by 44-year-old Carol Ann Gutierrez at Akers Road and Panama Lane, police said. Gutierrez died at the scene.
Monica Espinoza, a daughter of Gutierrez, said she's angry because she believes Alonzo should be held without bail. She said she and other family members will attend future hearings.
"He only turned himself in to save himself," Espinoza said.
Alonzo waited about two weeks before turning himself in to police. Relatives of Alonzo declined to comment after the arraignment.
Espinoza and others representing the Gutierrez family wore blue shirts with a picture of Gutierrez on the chest.
