A high school teacher accused of trying to make methamphetamine in a school lab has been charged with two felonies.

Jeff Ryan Scheidemantel faces charges of manufacturing meth and possession with the intent to manufacture meth, according to the Kern County Superior Court Web site.

No court dates were listed.

Scheidemantel could face a maximum of seven years in prison on the first charge and six years in prison on the second charge, according to the California Penal Code.

A man who answered the phone at Scheidemantel's house Thursday afternoon said Scheidemantel wasn't home and declined to comment further.

Scheidemantel, a chemistry teacher at Shafter High School, was arrested in early December. Police have said local and federal agents were alerted that Scheidemantel went online to buy red phosphorus, a key ingredient for making meth, and was trying to import the product from outside the country.

Search warrants were served at Scheidemantel's home and his school chemistry lab, police said. Investigators found several recipes for making meth and a few guns at his home and precursor chemicals were found at the school.

Kern High School District spokesman John Teves said Scheidemantel remained on paid administrative leave pending a review of the charges.
