The road to recovery for a local soldier injured in Iraq will be long -- perhaps as long as a year and a half in a Texas hospital -- but his family hopes he will literally be on his feet for a step or two by the end of this week.

U.S. Army Pfc. Jamin Moore, 21, was burned over 60 percent of his body Dec. 4 when the Humvee he was in was struck by a roadside bomb. Now he's at Brooke Army Medical Center in Fort Sam Houston, Texas, where he had a second surgery Tuesday to remove dead skin, according to Steve Alvidrez, a family friend. Moore's parents, Kevin and Julie, have asked him to serve as a spokesman while they help their son.

"Doctors are hoping to get Jamin on his feet by the end of this week, which is truly amazing. Let's pray he does," Alvidrez wrote in an e-mail. "It doesn't mean he will be walking around, just taking one step at a time."

Moore's ventilator has been removed, he is on a liquid diet and doctors hope to have him sit up today, according to Alvidrez, who talked to Moore's father Tuesday.

While the Liberty High School graduate and former Cal State Bakersfield student survived, three of his fellow soldiers in the 327th Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, died in the explosion.
