The jury issued a report Wednesday calling for better sanitation efforts at the east Kern shelter and a number of improvements to equipment and practices for field officers who operate out of the shelter.
Recommendations included:
* Installation of a county radio at the shelter so animal control officers in the shelter and out in the field can communicate.
* First aid and CPR training for workers.
* Purchase of a handgun, and training to use it, for the animal control officers who work out of Mojave.
* Addition of another animal control officer at the station.
Kern County Animal Control has 90 days to review and reply to the recommendations.
