Families touted in fighting gangs

Kern County's battle against gang violence happens on the streets, with guns and handcuffs and flashing lights.

But speakers at Valley Bible Fellowship Saturday night said the fight must also be waged inside homes, with strong family ties, understanding and support.
The southeast Bakersfield church, and Bakersfield's Stay Focused Ministries, hosted a rally and gang-education event Saturday night.
Pastors, police officers, school principals and county supervisors spoke and prayed at the meeting.
They called on parents to get involved in their children's lives and for citizens to reach out to other people's children who are at risk of joining gangs and becoming both criminals and victims of violence and hate.
The event was powered by Christian rap and testimonials from the former convicts who left prison to found Stay Focused.
