A man who had planned to run for Bakersfield City Council changed his mind, apparently leaving Ward 6 incumbent Jacquie Sullivan with a clear path to re-election.

Mark McCallum had filed papers and planned to run against three-term incumbent Sullivan. But he canceled his appointment to formally file for office Wednesday, saying he won’t be running, according to the city clerk’s office.
Ward 6 includes a section of southwest Bakersfield, south of Stockdale Highway and generally between Ashe Road and Wible Road.
McCallum could not be reached for comment. He had worked for Assemblyman Bill Maze, R-Visalia, but no longer works there.
City Councilman Harold Hanson filed this week to run for a third term. Hanson represents Ward 5, which includes the extreme southwestern portion of Bakersfield, mainly west of Ashe Road and south of Stockdale Highway.
Also on the ballot this fall are wards 2 and 6. Incumbent Sue Benham has already filed to run again for the Ward 2 seat.
The deadline to file to run is fast approaching. Would-be candidates must obtain a petition from the city clerk’s office and get 20 signatures from registered voters in the ward and turn them in by 5 p.m. Friday.
