It’s from Local 521 of the Service Employees International Union, which represents about 5,000 county workers and about 9,000 public employees total.
Union spokeswoman Aimee Barajas declined to say why it’s backing Thompson, saying she wanted to wait until a formal announcement is made. That was supposed to happen Tuesday but was postponed because of a conflict with Thompson’s schedule.
Watson said SEIU has never endorsed him and he wouldn’t expect such support given his history of private company management.
Thompson is a Taft city councilman. Watson has been a supervisor since 2002. The election is in June.
SEIU Local 521 represents most Kern County workers who aren’t public safety officers such as firefighters and sheriff’s deputies.
